Makalu Base Camp Trekking - 18 Days
Trip details
Makalu Base Camp Trekking is a remarkable journey into one of Nepal’s most remote and unspoiled Himalayan regions. The trek leads through the beautiful Arun and Barun valleys to the foot of Mount Makalu, the fifth-highest mountain in the world.
Beginning with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, the route passes through traditional villages, terraced farmland and the diverse landscapes of Makalu Barun National Park. Beyond Tashi Gaon, the trail climbs through rhododendron and fir forests towards Khongma Danda before crossing a dramatic series of high mountain passes, including Shipton La.
The upper Barun Valley presents an extraordinary wilderness of alpine meadows, waterfalls, rock walls, glaciers and towering Himalayan peaks. From Shersong, trekkers make a day excursion to Makalu Base Camp at approximately 4,870 metres.
This challenging trek is ideal for physically fit travellers looking for a quieter and more adventurous alternative to Nepal’s popular trekking routes. Accommodation and services are simple, particularly in the upper valley, but the isolation, scenery and sense of achievement make this a truly memorable Himalayan journey.

Why Choose This Trek?
Makalu Base Camp is suited to trekkers who want to experience a quieter and less-commercialized part of Nepal. The trail receives considerably fewer visitors than the Everest and Annapurna regions.
The route combines cultural encounters in the lower villages with a genuine wilderness experience in the upper Barun Valley. It is physically demanding, but the scenery, isolation and close view of Mount Makalu provide an exceptional reward.

Useful Information
Best Time to Trek
Spring: March to May
Spring generally offers warmer daytime temperatures, blooming rhododendrons and good mountain visibility. Lower elevations can become warm in May, while snow may remain around the high passes.
Autumn: October to November
Autumn usually provides stable conditions, clear skies and excellent mountain views. Temperatures become colder towards the end of November, particularly in the upper valley.
Monsoon and Winter
The monsoon months can bring heavy rain, muddy trails, landslides and flight disruptions. Winter can produce deep snow on Shipton La and extremely cold conditions in the upper valley. These seasons require specialized planning.
Trip Difficulty and Fitness
This is a strenuous high-altitude trek. Participants should be prepared for:
Six to eight hours of walking on most days
Longer walking days of up to approximately ten hours
Steep and sustained ascents and descents
Rocky, muddy, snowy or icy terrain
Two crossings of the Shipton La pass system
Basic accommodation and limited facilities
Cold temperatures and rapidly changing weather
Several nights above 3,500 metres
Regular cardiovascular exercise, hill walking, stair climbing and strength training should begin at least eight to twelve weeks before departure.
Altitude and Acclimatization
The trek reaches approximately 4,870 metres at Makalu Base Camp. Altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of age or fitness.
Participants must walk at a controlled pace, remain hydrated and immediately report symptoms such as persistent headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, confusion or difficulty breathing.
The guide has the authority to change the itinerary, stop an ascent or arrange a descent when required for safety.
Accommodation
Local lodges and teahouses are used in the lower villages. Facilities become more basic above Tashi Gaon. Seasonal shelters or supported camping may be required around Debotay, Merek and Shersong.
Rooms are normally twin-sharing. Toilets may be shared or outside, heating is limited and hot showers are not always available.
Meals
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided during the trekking itinerary. Typical meals include:
Dal bhat
Rice, noodles and pasta
Soup
Potatoes and seasonal vegetables
Eggs

The recommended arrangement is one porter for every two trekkers. A porter generally carries a combined load of approximately 20–22 kilograms. Each participant should limit the porter bag to approximately 10 kilograms.
Participants must carry their own daypack containing water, valuables, medication, waterproof clothing and daily essentials.
